Well, yesterday I tried Thoggen (a dvd backup app which uses theora)

And now I have to say 4 things about it:

1. it's damn SLOW ... well, the theora encoder in general isn't very fast, butthis thing is unbelievable slow


2. it uses GStreamer for encoding ... and gst is mixing the headers so one probably get a vorbis file and not a theora (the order has to be theora-vorbis-whatever header)


3. it uses GTK .... well, this +gst says us it's probably a very gnomish app ... well, GTK isn't scrap, in comparison with Qt it's just bullshit ;)


4. ONE developer  =  real MAN-power ;D

But let me tell something about the usage:

• I downloaded the source and untared it


• ./configure --prefix=/usr


• holy linus:

configure:10835: checking for gstreamer-0.8 >= 0.8.9
configure:10839: result: no

• so I installed gstreamer-devel and gstreamer-plugins-devel


• ./configure --prefix=/usr

configure:10835: checking for gstreamer-0.8 >= 0.8.9
configure:10839: result: yes

• awesome

GStreamer plugin xy not found

• I got this message about 7 times .... then it was time for make


• NO ERRORS ... well this was actually very kewl =)

so I hammered thoggen in konsole

a timeout would be usefull in this case ;)

• oh holy awesomeness of GTK.....


• then I mounted a iso (I wrote a script for doing this without any konsole usage ... just a bit buggy ;))


• .....told thoggen where to search for the files


• selected the titles (actually I selected one with 43secs)


• and thoggen started the encoding


• well, really easy thing ... maybe it would be easier if the author would use Qt :D




• hm, ~10 MINUTES for 43 secondes -- totally BS

but as I thought it can't be better:

• oh kewl a vorbis file!! -- hm? -- Vorbis? -- Shouldn't it be theora? -- Kaffeine what do you think? -- Kaffeine: "well, this is a theora video with vorbis sound" -- right! -- Konqui? -- Konqui: "This is a vorbis audio file with theora video" -- uhm, if you think so

• so I went to #thoggen


• one bot and one maybe-not-a-bot-thing were there


• coz the maybe-not-a-bot-thing was away I went to #kde-devel


• there I learned what the cmd 'file' does --- you will not belive it, but I never used it before


• file foo told me

Ogg data, Vorbis audio, stereo, 44100 Hz, ~128000 bps

• just cool


• so went to #theora


• and they told me, that the order of headers has to be theora-vorbis and gst does mix them


• ....KEWL THING THEN


• so I tested this with support from #theora


• ...I splitted the file


• ...and re-merged it


• awesomeness

Today is my birthday (again one year older...) --- as this is usually a very big event I'll be dead when this day is over


so what I am one year after the last birthday?
I'm:

• tired


• addicted to music, as well as to the player (as amaroK is the best music player ever)


• non-smoker


• addicted to heineken and coffee (probably Koffee)


• nearly bankruptcy (as I bought too much cd's and cigarettes)


• totally crazy


• going to learn Qt/C++ for writing the application easytaQ 

all in all, it was a fucking good year  ----  the next will probably be a better one as I hopefully will have enough money for the next year's aKademy :)
